In the wintertime I find myself getting quite snacky in the afternoon. I am constantly searching in the fridge for something to munch on and like to keep a nutritious snack on hand. One of my favorite things to snack on is hummus! I love to grab new flavors of hummus to try out from Trader Joes, but one thing I like even more is homemade hummus!
Typically hummus is made from chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans. It is quick and easy to throw together and is a foolproof snack when you are looking for something healthy! Though I love hummus made with chickpeas, my favorite type of hummus is made with white beans! Get ready for the smoothest dip of your life!

Why should I make my hummus with white beans instead of chickpeas?
The reason I love to make my hummus with white beans is because of the mild flavor and most of all the smooth consistency! Hummus made with chickpeas is great too, but in my opinion, the texture isn’t as wonderful. Using canned or cooked white beans creates the most delicious silky texture you could ever ask for! I also find that white beans allow you to create almost any flavor you could dream of due to their mild and delicious flavor.
Why is white bean hummus a good snack?
White bean hummus is a snack that you will be reaching for again and again! Not only is it super versatile, but it is also great for you! White beans are packed with protein and fiber and are also packed with vital nutrients! They contain B6, folate, and even magnesium! This easy snack can aid in muscle production when combined with exercise due to the amount of protein that it packs! It will keep you full longer and the texture gives it an amazing satiety factor!
What types of beans can I use to make white bean hummus?
There are many types of white beans that you can use to make this recipe! I prefer to use canned beans due to the ease of simply opening up a can, but you can absolutely make your own white beans to use in the recipe. Here are a few types of white beans that I have used:
Cannallini Beans (also known as white kidney beans)
Great Northern Beans
Baby Lima Beans
Butter Beans

Spices
Olive Oil
How do I make white bean hummus?
For starters, you will want to get out your blender. You could absolutely make this recipe by hand if you don’t have a blender, the texture, however, will suffer. I like to use my Ninja blender set to high speed for a smooth and creamy consistancy.
- Simply start by draining your can of white beans. (I don’t bother rinsing mine, but you can if you would like to.) Place your drained can of white beans into your blender.
- Add in your tahini, lemon juice, minced garlic, and spices of choice.
- Place the lid on your blender and pulse to combine the ingredients.
- Set your blender to high speed and drizzle your olive oil into the mixture while the blender is running. If your hummus is too thick for your liking, you can add in a little water to get it to the consistency that you prefer.
- Store your white bean hummus in an air tight container for up to a week and enjoy!

How to eat white bean hummus
I love to eat this hummus as a dip with veggies! I eat it with carrots, cucumbers, snap peas, and even celery! It’s also delicious to use this white bean hummus as a spread on sandwiches and wraps in place of mayo. One other thing you can use this hummus for is to make sauces! Simply thin the hummus out with chicken stock to use as a sauce over chicken or pasta. Lastly, you can use this as a base for vegan cheese sauce. Add the hummus back into a blender and add cooked butternut squash and nutritional yeast for a great cheese sauce replacement for macaroni and cheese! However you decide to eat it, I promise, you will love it!
