Do you ever just crave the sweet and satisfying flavor of a good ole’ candy bar but don’t want to sacrifice the calories? Today, I will show you how to satisfy those cravings with healthy peanut butter date “Snickers”!
A meal, for me, is not complete without something sweet to finish it off! I often find myself searching through our freezer for ice cream or through our pantry for a cookie, but always wish I had something that was both healthy AND delicious for a quick dessert! This recipe is the perfect solution to that equation! It is not only quick to throw together, but rich enough that just one will satisfy even the strongest sweet tooth!
What is a peanut butter date “Snickers”?
Of course, we all know what a Snickers is! The cure to hanger according to commercials and for me it is the cure to really anything! I LOVE them! Though I consume my fair share of mini snickers around every holiday involving candy, I usually don’t let myself purchase a whole candy bar from the store because I cannot be trusted! There is definitely nothing wrong with a sweet treat when you are craving one, but this alternative is both good for you and delicious too!
A peanut butter date “snickers” is a healthy alternative to an actual Snicker’s candy bar. It is both vegan and gluten free and extremely easy to throw together! These are fun to take as a little snack or dessert to a dinner party and I have been known to show up to gal-entine’s dinners with these in a fun heart shaped box. Anytime they make their way to the dinner table, everyone can’t believe what they are made of and just how delicious they really are.
What are the health benefits of consuming Medjool Dates?
Dates are a great alternative to traditional white sugar. White sugar contains what are called “empty calories” or calories that when consumed have to real benefit to your overall health. Dates, while equaling the sweetness of white sugar, contain multiple vitamins and minerals making them a nutrient dense food! Two Medjool dates contain about 110 calories and 1 gram of protein, but they also include selenium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and copper.
While Medjool dates are not necessarily low in calories, they are high in vitamins and nutrients, making them an excellent addition to your daily diet. As long as consumption is limited to a few a day, these babies will pack a nutrient dense punch to your caloric intake on a daily basis! There are MANY ways to incorporate dates into your diet, but this recipe is one that is sure to please!
What do I need to make peanut butter date “Snickers”?
Natural Peanut butter (PS the best peanut butter of all time is Laura Scudder’s Nutty)
Fork
Ceramic bowl for melting chocolate in the microwave
How do I make peanut butter date “Snickers”?
These peanut butter date “Snickers” are so easy to make it feels like you are cheating! Here is how you put them together:
- Tear each of your dates in half and remove the pit.
2. Place a small amount of peanut butter and 3-4 salted peanuts inside of the dates. Put the two halves back together.
3. Melt your semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave. Start with 1 minute and adding an additional 10 seconds at a time until smooth and melted.
4. Using a fork, coat each of the dates in the melted chocolate. Tap your fork on the edge of the bowl to make the melted chocolate sheet into a smooth layer.
5. While the chocolate is still melted, sprinkle a small amount of flakey sea salt on each for added flavor and crunch!
Place each chocolate covered date onto a cookie sheet (lined with parchment for easy cleanup) and place in the freezer for 15 minutes to set.
What are some other variations I could make?
There are a million different directions that you could go with this one, but here are a few that I think would be DELICIOUS!
- Almond Joy – Substitute the peanuts and peanut butter for almonds in the center and sprinkle coconut on top of the melted chocolate before setting.
- Twix – place shortbread cookie crumbles in the center and coat in milk chocolate.
- Take Five – use the same combo as you used for the peanut butter snickers and add a pretzel stick into the mix! Omg YUM!!!!
